Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue has been dubbed ‘The 21st Century Stress Syndrome’ and yet surprisingly it is still not considered an illness in conventional medicine.

However adrenal fatigue syndrome is a fully-recognizable condition that affects many people. Fortunately, in most cases can be alleviated with proper nutrition, lifestyle adjustments and natural supplements.

What are the adrenals?

On top of each kidney there is an adrenal gland, about the size of a large grape. The hormones they produce are responsible for many functions we need to stay alive and healthy, including regulating blood pressure, blood sugar and the strength of our immune system. However, their primary function is to regulate the release of energy, especially in periods of stress.

What is adrenal fatigue?

Today many of us are subject to an almost endless number of daily stressors, from the emotional: children, money, marital issues; to the physical: fatigue, diet, lack of exercise.

Adrenal glands that are functioning properly secrete minute, yet precise amounts of steroid hormones. But chronic, low-level stress, whether it’s physical, emotional, environmental and/or psychological can cause the adrenals to malfunction, upsetting this finely tuned balance and leading to hormone depletion and a general sense of exhaustion, feeling wiped out and difficulty coping.

Things that we used to be able to do happily are now burdens.

What are the symptoms of adrenal fatigue?

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include tiredness and a sense of sleepiness during the day, salty and sweet cravings, needing stimulants or high doses of caffeine in coffee or colas, low blood pressure, difficulties in recuperating from illnesses and general body aches. Food cravings increase and it becomes impossible to lose weight – especially around the middle. Sometimes misunderstood as an autoimmune disorder, adrenal fatigue can mimic some precursors to other common illnesses and disease.

What triggers adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue can be caused by any condition, illness or situation that undermines the function of the adrenal glands. This includes events or situations that place burden on the body:

• Major surgery, long-term nutritional deficiencies or substance addictions
• Any recurrent disease, infection or illness
• Chronic exposure to toxic chemical and pollutants
• Prolonged stress and physiological circumstances
• Feeling helpless in your work environment,
• Negative personal relationships
• Financial hardship

How does healthy nutrition help treat adrenal fatigue naturally?

In some cases adrenal fatigue may become chronic, mainly because of prolonged stressful events, and poor health. The good news is that with the proper nutritional support and some lifestyle modifications, it can be treated effectively. In every case of adrenal recovery, diet is a major factor.

Treating adrenal fatigue involves reducing stress on your body and your mind, eliminating toxins, avoiding negative thinking, and replenishing your body with healthy food and positive thoughts.

This includes adopting a natural whole-foods diet, avoiding white flour and other processed grains, drinking plenty of fluids, identifying food intolerances and other contributing factors such as nutritional deficiencies, as well as the appropriate use of natural supplements and home remedies.

Lifestyle modifications include developing a regular sleep-wake cycle, stress-reduction techniques like yoga and meditation and avoiding stressful situations as much as possible.
