A variety of sprouts

Why Sprout? The nutrition facts behind these powerhouses.

Why Sprout?

Sprouts may offer some of the highest levels of nutrition available. Because a sprouting or germinating plant needs certain nutrients for growth, sprouts are rich in proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Many kinds of seeds, beans or pulses can be sprouted, but the most popular ones include watercress, broccoli, sunflower, mung bean, adzuki bean, soy bean, peas and lentils.

Many sprouts contain compounds with anti-cancer and detoxifying properties. All offer the following potential health benefits:

  • Support cell regeneration
  • High in antioxidants that protect our cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.
  • Alkalizing effect on the body, which protects us from disease.
  • Rich in oxygen, which also helps protect against abnormal cell growth, viruses and bacteria – which can’t survive in an oxygen-rich environment.

Regularly eating sprouts can radically improve your overall nutrition.

It’s also easy to sprout at home and much less expensive than buying sprouts at the supermarket. You can find many tips for doing your own sprouting on the Internet. Just make sure you start with good quality, pathogen free products (use the smaller beans like adzuki that are much less likely to contain mold than larger ones).

People with lowered immunity should avoid homegrown sprouts as they do carry a higher risk of contamination.
